mp visits chipmonks

Julian Smith MP for Ripon and Skipton visited ChipMonks @ Giggleswick Day Nursery on 7th May in response to an invitation from the Manager and owner of the nursery – Helen Monks.

Mr Smith was interested in discussing the wraparound care provided by ChipMonks after a constituent had approached him during one of his surgeries to flag up the issue of a lack of after school care and holiday care for older children in the area.  The constituent also published a letter in the Craven Herald to which Mrs Monks replied.

ChipMonks runs a busy day nursery in the beautiful grounds of Giggleswick School and works very closely with their outstanding early years unit.  ChipMonks also works in partnership with Settle Primary School and their outstanding early years provision. ChipMonks runs an extremely busy after school club at Settle Primary School and has also recently opened a Community Holiday Club to cater for all the local primary school children in the area.  Since opening ChipMonks just over three years ago, Mrs Monks, in partnership with Giggleswick Junior School and Settle Primary School, has worked really hard to ensure that they are providing vital wraparound care for the families in this rural community.
After School Care for older children is a real problem for small primary schools and financial viability will always remain an issue.

Mr Smith was also keen to discuss any issues that Mrs Monks may have in the day to day running of her busy nursery.  Mrs Monks mentioned that funding was a particular worry to her and that Me Too funding which allows children from less well off families to access after school clubs and holiday clubs was being withdrawn due to local authority cuts.  Mrs Monks sees this funding as a vital tool to help children enjoy such clubs.

Mrs Monks said “I was delighted that Mr Smith took the time out to come and visit us and it is good to know that someone is fighting our corner.”

Julian Smith MP said:

“I’d like to thank Helen for showing me around ChipMonks and discussing these issues with me. I wanted to find out more details about the provision of care for children in Craven and would continue to encourage anyone who has particular views to get in touch with me.”
